Eggnog made with egg yolks and whipping cream is a must-have holiday indulgence for many. This recipe serves 10 so you can make a big batch of this creamy drink for any festive gathering. For a nonalcoholic version, omit the rum and bourbon and increase the milk to 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 cups. Serve with cinnamon sticks and a dash of nutmeg.

What Is Eggnog?

A traditional holiday punch, eggnog has been around for centuries. The mixture of egg yolks, cream, sugar, and liquor creates an indulgent, custard-like treat that seems just right around the holidays. Traditional recipes call for beating raw egg whites. Pasteurized eggs can be used. Our recipe cooks the eggs until custardy and then combines them with whipped cream. It's a thick and frothy drink that tastes creamy and sweet, like melted ice cream. One cup is usually plenty. Bourbon, brandy, and rum are all good additions for a spiked version. While it is usually served cold, some prefer a mug of warm eggnog. Either is acceptable. Store any leftover eggnog for up to three days.

Ingredients

  • 6 beaten egg yolks

  • 2 cup milk

  • cup sugar

  • 1 - 3 tablespoon light rum

  • 1 - 3 tablespoon bourbon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 cup whipping cream

  • 2 tablespoon sugar

  • Ground nutmeg

Directions

  1. Cook the Egg Yolks and Milk

In a large heavy saucepan mix the egg yolks, milk, and the 1/3 cup sugar. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture just coats a metal spoon.

  2. Chill the Mixture

Remove from heat. Place the pan in a sink or bowl of ice water and stir for 2 minutes.

  3. Stir in Alcohol and Vanilla

Stir in rum, bourbon, and vanilla. Cover and chill for at least 4 or up to 24 hours.

  4. Make Whipped Cream

Just before serving, in a mixing bowl beat the cream and the 2 tablespoons sugar until soft peaks form.

  5. Finish the Punch

Transfer chilled egg mixture to a punch bowl. Fold in the whipped cream mixture. Serve at once. Sprinkle each serving with nutmeg. Makes about 10 (4-ounce) servings.

Tips

Up to 1 day ahead, prepare the cooked custard mixture. Cover and chill. Just before serving, complete as directed.
